Make Peace with the Positive Purpose of Darkness

Night turns into day again in another part of this great big world. Surely, the Eternal One created all things, not just for His pleasure but as metaphors for our own understanding. Our wondrous universe hangs in incredible balance with precise alignment, even as it goes through continuous cycles of renewal. And this should assure us that our journey through this life has also been so ordered.

Periods of darkness juxtapose with periods of light, as our own world turns, reflecting a constant, ever-moving cycle of events that can sometimes feel like we’re free falling. Free falling through a vortex of alternating joy and contentment, sorrow and overwhelming despair. But, as much as we wish for periods of perpetual light, we should make peace with the fact that darkness also has it own positive purpose. Rest. Restoration. Rejuvenation. And yes, to birth dreams that would not be possible in the brilliance of light. Such attributes like compassion, empathy, and gratitude, and the awareness of our real purpose in this life usually awaken not from mere observation of the darkness but an appreciation of why it exists.

Therefore, take comfort each day in the rising sun. It is a reminder of the certainty with which morning comes after the night. It is the quintessential metaphor of HOPE. Hope for new beginnings and the opportunity to do things better than we did yesterday. To love more. To speak words of grace and atonement. To show kindness, as we are able. Moreover, morning comes up over the horizon so effortlessly and with such grace and majesty that it should be a reminder of The One, in whose care we reside and to whom all our troubles are as nothing.
